Perfectionism: Friend or Foe? (Joy Torchia)

  • Episode #12

Episode summary: A common perception is that perfectionism is the same as striving to be your best. Joy Torchia, the founder of Torchlight Life Design Coaching & Consulting, thinks it’s a trait to become aware of and overcome. But is there any situation in which perfectionism can serve you? Can perfectionism be a friend?  Or is it always a fear-based foe?  And why is it so hard to change the pattern of perfectionism that is blocking you from moving forward?

In this episode, Melinda Cohan talks to Joy about perfectionism and how it impacts our coaching businesses. Joy believes that giving grace and space is important when dealing with perfectionism, but also believes that we should keep pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones. As she says, “There’s no comfort in the growth zone, and there’s no growth in the comfort zone.”

Joy is a certified personal development coach and a well-respected and award-winning communications strategist.

In this episode we discuss:

  • What is perfectionism and how does it present itself?
  • What is a fixed versus a growth mindset, and how do they relate to perfectionism?
  • Is there any situation in which perfectionism can serve you? Can perfectionism be a friend?
  • Why is it so hard to change the pattern of perfectionism that is blocking you from moving forward?
  • Can perfectionism be self-diagnosed?
“Perfectionism is not the same as striving to be our best. It’s not about healthy achievement and growth. Rather, it’s driven by this fear of failure.”
