Why Leaders Lose Their Mojo

  • Episode #227

What happens when success on the outside no longer matches how you feel on the inside? Michi Lantz talks with Bertie le Roux, leadership coach, speaker, and author, about self-leadership, identity, visibility, and why success can still feel lonely. A thoughtful conversation on belief, purpose, and rebuilding your inner confidence.

Bertie Le Roux’s journey has been shaped by resilience, belief, and an enduring commitment to human potential. Growing up, he learned early that success is rarely linear. Like many, he experienced moments of uncertainty, self-doubt, and invisible struggle long before outward success appeared. These early experiences shaped his deep curiosity about people, leadership, and what truly sustains confidence over time.

He pursued formal education (University of Stellenbosch) in finance (B Com degree), business (Hons B in Business & Admin), and higher education teaching (4 Yr Higher Educ Diploma), which laid a solid analytical foundation. Yet his most profound lessons came outside lecture halls – through lived experience, setbacks, and personal reinvention. Sport played a defining role in his life. At 16, he was told a serious injury would end his sporting future. Against medical advice, belief carried him forward. He continued competing at senior levels, later qualifying professionally as a sports coach. Sport taught him discipline, identity, and the power of mindset long before leadership theory gave it language.

Professionally, he built a career spanning more than five decades in teaching, business, governance, coaching, and speaking. He has served on boards, led teams through complexity, and worked across cultures and industries some of the over 40 countries visited. Along the way, he experienced both achievement and quiet internal struggle – moments where the world saw success, but he no longer felt it.

Family, friendships, and service have grounded him. He is married, a father and grandfather, and a recipient of many awards and recognitions of which Rotary’s Paul Harris Award for service beyond self being one of the most prized recognitions. These relationships continually remind him that leadership without humanity is hollow. His journey today is about helping others rediscover belief – not to become more successful, but to feel aligned, purposeful, and invincible again.
